INTRODUCTION: Reading is the most relevant achievement during the first year of school. Reading disability is very frequent and has close relationship with childhood language impairment during childhood. TEPSI (test for psychomotor development) is a national screening test for psychomotor development in childhood.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether TEPSI results at 4 year of age among childrens under preemptive health control in primary health care centers in Santiago predicts reading acquisition during the first grade of school.
METHODS: 107 children were enrolled. Their TEPSI results at 4 years of age were recorded and then reading skills were evaluated at the end of the first grade of school.
RESULTS: Among those children with language problems in TEPSI score there was a small but statistically significant increase in reading disability (RR: 1,89 (IC95% 1,1-3,2). |
