Proper nutrition is critical for growth, health and nutritional well-being during the first two years of life. Exclusive breastfeeding, which is the optimal mode of feeding during the first semester, is not always practiced. Despite all the efforts to promote, protect and support it and all the benefits it brings, it is still difficult for the majority of the population to fulfill it. Objective: To compare the nutritional status of infants under 1 year of age who received exclusive breastfeeding, with those who received breastfeeding and early weaning in the immediate medical care unit for pediatric patients at the Julio Criollo Rivas Hospital. Second quarter 2020. Bolívar City, Bolívar State. Methodology: Field study, analytical, cross-sectional, comparative of cases and non-experimental controls, based on taking anthropometric measurements. The sample was made up of 100 infants, whose parents voluntarily agreed to participate in the research. Results: 45% were exclusively breastfed, only for less than a month of life, followed by 26% fed between 4-6 months of life, 71% received early weaning, of which 49.3 % present normal nutritional status according to the anthropometric evaluation using the Fundacredesa tables, followed by those with nutritional status in the critical zone where 36.6% were found. Foods other than breast milk were introduced to 18% early, with a predominance of processed cereals, of those infants with early weaning, 25.4% had the common cold, followed by those with acute diarrheal disease where it was found at 18 ,3%. Conclusions: no statistically significant differences were found (according to the X2 test) between both groups of infants evaluated for the variables studied.

Keywords: Nutritional status, infants, breastfeeding, early weaning.
